Napier Tartan

The family have particular associations with Merchiston Castle and the lands of Merchiston in Edinburgh (from the 1430s), and also estates at Lennox, Menteith and Gartness. The Napiers of Thirlestane are associated with Ettrickdale in the Scottish Borders.

During the reigns of King James II (1430-60) and James III (1452-88), three Napiers were Lord Provosts of Edinburgh. Archibald Napier, was an important man in late 16th century Scotland, and his son John (1550 - 1617) was the noted mathematician.
