Forth, River

One of the principal rivers of Central Scotland, the River Forth rises to the north of Ben Lomond in two headstreams, the Duchray Water and Avondhu, which meet a mile (1.5 km) west of Aberfoyle. The river meanders eastwards for 39 miles (63 km) to Stirling, a strategic crossing point and tidal limit where the river begins to widen out into an estuary known as the Firth of Forth. Its chief tributaries to the west of Stirling are the River Teith and the Allan Water.
