Cromdale Battlefield is the site of the last battle of the attempt to return King James VII to the British throne and is located 4½ miles (7.5 km) east of Grantown on Spey. It took place on 1st May 1690 when government troops under Sir Thomas Livingstone, surprised and routed a Jacobite force of 1500 men in the Haughs of Cromdale, killing 400.
