Muirtown Swing Bridge

A single-ended swing bridge crossing the Caledonian Canal a mile (1.5 km) northwest of Inverness city centre, the Muirtown Swing Bridge was built by Sir William Arrol & Co. in 1935. The electrically-operated bridge opens to allow vessels to pass through the canal. It replaced a double-sided swing bridge dating from 1816, an original bearing from which can still be seen. The Tomnahurich Swing Bridge, which crosses the canal 1¼ miles (2 km) to the south, is identical.
