Harold's Tower

Lying on the western slopes of Clardon Hill, 1¼ miles (2 km) east northeast of Thurso is Harold's Tower, looking like a peculiar little toy-fort. This mausoleum of the Sinclairs of Ulbster was built 1780-90 by Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster (1754 - 1835) near where the Norse Earl Harold (the Younger) is supposed to have been killed and buried at the Battle of Clairdon in 1196. The spot was originally marked by a shrine, later replaced by a chapel of which no trace remains.
