Inchaffray Abbey

Nothing remains of Inchaffray Abbey in central Perth and Kinross save a mound on the Pow Burn, 6 miles (10 km) east of Crieff. The original abbey stood on an island surrounded by a lake that was famous for its eels. Maurice, Abbey of Inchaffray, was chaplain to King Robert the Bruce and carried the relics of St Fillan before the Scottish army at the Battle of Bannockburn. A later Abbot, Laurence Oliphant, was killed at the Battle of Flodden and by the 15th Century the abbey's importance was in decline.
