Overview of Edzell Castle

The ruined castle of Edzell stands close to the village of Edzell, 5 miles (8 km) north of Brechin in Angus. It dates from the early 16th century when the L-plan tower section was built. Additions were made in the early 17th century but it is generally regarded that the building work was never completed as the northeast section is incomplete rather than ruined. There have been various owners of the castle, which is now retained by the descendants of the Earl of Dalhousie and maintained by Historic Scotland. Various artefacts within the castle are of interest, but the main attraction is the magnificent garden. The walled garden is on Italian Renaissance style, built originally by Sir David Lindsay, but recreated in the 1930s after many years of neglect.
