Ettrick ForestView over Bowhill to the Ettrick Forest

A large area of moorland located to the south of Peebles in the Scottish Borders, Ettrick Forest stretches from Dollar Law in the west to Selkirk in the east and rises steeply to the north of the Ettrick Water. A favourite hunting ground of the Scottish kings, grants of land in Ettrick Forest were made to the great Border abbeys. It is today used predominately for sheep grazing and was associated with the writer James Hogg, The Ettrick Shepherd (1770 - 1835), a contemporary of Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832).
