Alexander Milne Calder

1846 - 1923

Sculptor. Born in Aberdeen, Calder moved to Edinburgh and worked with John Rhind (1828-92). In 1868, he emigrated for the United States, settling in Philadelphia. He spent twenty years creating some 200 sculptures for Philadelphia City Hall, including the 11-m (37-foot) bronze statue of William Penn that stands on top of the hall. His son, Alexander Stirling Calder and grandson, Alexander Calder, became noted American sculptors.
