William (Willie) Logan

1913 - 1966

Flamboyant building contractor, entrepreneur and Freeman of Dingwall. Logan was born and raised in Muir of Ord and educated at Dingwall Academy. He joined the family construction firm of Duncan Logan Ltd., eventually taking over from his father. He was a pillar of the Free Church, but also took risks illustrated by him founding the regional airline Loganair in 1962. He was involved in many significant construction projects, including the Garry-Moriston and Conon Hydro-Electric Schemes. His most memorable project was probably the Tay Road Bridge linking Dundee with Fife, but he was killed as the result of an aeroplane crash on Dunain Hill near Inverness just six months before the bridge was officially opened. Logan is buried in Fodderty Cemetery (Strathpeffer), where the monument above his grave is in the shape of a section of the bridge, and the inscription extols his works thus:

Man of vision, courage and integrity. A pioneer of hydro-electric construction and a wise master-builder who contributed much to his native land. He left monuments to his skill in many parts.
