Stephen Conroy

1964 -

Painter. Born in Helensburgh, Conroy was educated at the Glasgow School of Art (1982-1987). While still a student, he had his work included in The Vigorous Imagination exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, which gained his work critical attention.

Conroy has a recognisable style. He is noted for his traditional drawing of people in formal poses, often brooding and anonymous, together with the use of light and shade and a formality of composition where the resulting painting could belong to a bygone era, yet remains enigmatic.

Conroy received much media interest following a legal dispute in 1989 which concerned the ownership of several of his paintings. His works can be seen in the Aberdeen Art Gallery, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the National Portrait Gallery (London) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). Conroy went on to win the 'Grand Prize of HRH Prince Rainer III of Monaco' in 1998.
