Grandtully

Situated adjacent to Little Ballinluig in Strathtay, the settlement of Grandtully (pronounced 'Grantly') developed in association with a former railway station that lay mid-way between Aberfeldy and Ballinluig at a crossing of the River Tay. Today Grandtully is a noted centre for white water canoeing on the Tay. Grandtully Castle to the west, a former stronghold of the Stewarts, dates from the 15th century with later additions. The lands of Grandtully were held in the 14th century by Sir John Stewart, Lord of Innermeath and Lorn, a descendant of Alexander, lord high steward of Scotland. St Mary's Church near to the castle was founded c.1533 by Sir Alexander Stewart to serve the township of Pitcairn. A fine example of a long, low pre-Reformation chapel, it is noted for its ecclesiastical painted ceilings.
