Overview of Latheronwheel

A linear village on the east coast of Caithness in Highland Council Area, Latheronwheel lies a mile (1.5 km) to the southwest of Latheron. It was established in 1835 by local landowner Captain Robert Dunbar whose wish was that the village be named Janetstown after his wife, but the older name, which was linked to a crossing place on the Burn of Latheronwheel has survived. Its harbour sheltered over 50 vessels at the peak of the herring fisheries. Latheronwheel House, which dates from the early 18th century, was enlarged in Scottish Baronial style by the architect David Bryce in the 1850s.
