A scattered hamlet on the west coast of Highland Council Area, Balmacara sits on Balmacara Bay on the north shore of Loch Alsh. The 2750-ha (6795-acre) crofting estate of Balmacara was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland in 1946 by Lady Hamilton and in 1954 Lochalsh House was conveyed to the Trust. The restoration of Balmacara Square and the surrounding native pinewoods have been important conservation projects carried out by the Trust in association with other bodies.
