Lindores Village
©2010 Gazetteer for Scotland
A village in Abdie Parish, North Fife, Lindores lies 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Newburgh at the head of Lindores Loch and at the junction of the A 913 and B 937 roads. A castle of the Macduff Earls of Fife once stood at the east end of the village and a mansion house beside the loch was built by Admiral Sir Frederick Maitland (1777-1839) who received Napoleon on board the Bellerophon after the battle of Waterloo. The title of Lord Lindores was acquired in 1600 by the Leslie family, but became dormant on the death of the seventh holder in 1775. Nearby are the Den of Lindores, Lindores Abbey and Abdie Church.
