Overview of Port Logan

A village of The Rhins of Galloway, Dumfries and Galloway, Port Logan overlooks Port Logan Bay, 11 miles (17 km) south of Stranraer. The village comprises a row of houses along the shore established in the early 19th Century by Colonel McDouall of Logan in an attempt to create an improved port facility. It has a harbour built 1818-22 and a circular granite lighthouse dating from the 1830s. Rock-cut steps lead into the 15-m (50-foot) diameter Logan Fish Ponds which are enclosed with crenellated walls and guarded by a castellated cottage. The ponds were originally stocked by the McDoualls with carp. Described as "the most exotic garden in Scotland", the nearby Logan Botanic Garden features many plants that thrive in the exceptionally mild climate of southwest Scotland. It is a specialist garden of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Also close by are the remains of Balzieland Old Castle, a former stronghold of the McDoualls of Logan.
