Auchenblae (Auchinblae)

A village in SE Aberdeenshire, Auchenblae (also Auchinblae) lies in the Howe of the Mearns, 5 miles (8 km) north of Laurencekirk. It developed in the 18th and 19th centuries as a textile and market centre with cattle and horse fairs. The most noted of these fairs was the three-day Paddy Fair or Paldy Fair which takes its name from Palladius, an early saint whose bones were brought to Auchenblae by the Mearns missionary St Ternan. On a knoll at the south end of the village is St Palladius's Chapel and in the present church can be found a Pictish stone which is one of the earliest cross-slabs in the area. There is a memorial here to the Protestant martyr George Wishart.
