An historic village situated on the River Teith where it is joined by the Ardoch burn, Doune lies close to Doune Castle on the A84 road, 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Stirling. Once known for its manufacture of pistols, a trade introduced by Thomas Cadell in 1646, Doune is now a dormitory village and centre of tourism. Amongst its buildings of historic and architectural interest are Kilmadock Parish Church (1822), the Market Cross (1620), the Moray Institute and the Bridge of Teith (1535). Nearby are an Arts and Antique Centre, occupying the site of the former Doune Motor Museum (which operated 1970-98), and the Doune Ponds which were developed from an abandoned sand and gravel quarry.
