Meikleour
Perth and KinrossThe Beech Hedge, Meikleour

Located 5 miles (8 km) south of Blairgowrie, just to the north of the confluence of the Rivers Tay and Isla in the Valley of Strathmore in Perth and Kinross, Meikleour is noted for its tall beech hedge which screens Meikleour House from the main road. The hedge was planted in 1746 and is now 26m (85 feet) high and 0.3 miles (0.5 km) long. It is said the hedge grows towards the heavens because the men who planted it were killed at Culloden. Meikleour House itself was built by David Bryce in 1870, and is now owned by the Marquis of Lansdowne. The village, which was designated a burgh of barony in 1665, has an old market cross and an old coaching inn.
